What do you wish you could ask other people, but don't because they might be alarmed/horrified/disgusted by you for asking? It could be to a particular person or to just anyone who knows you. It could be a question or a request.

There are a couple people who have made sexual partner choices that ended up turning into huge dramatic flareups, polarizing our groups of friends in some cases. I want to know why they did that, when it was pretty obvious what would happen afterwards.

Bringing up the subject is in social bad taste. With a few exceptions, most people politely ignore the situations, pretend it isn't happening publicly, and the gossip about it privately. So I think acknowledging the issue and asking these people these personal questions in a social setting would fit the "alarming" part of your question.

Alarming, yes. But I hope that with the right circumstances, it would flare up and then be better in the open than whispered.

It's a Catch-22, but I want to ask my ex how she's doing and whether we can talk and be friends like we used to, but if the answer's no, then I can't un-speak to her. So we haven't spoken in 3 years.

How are you afraid she'll judge you for asking?

Because I believe she's now married, and probably employed. I know she's graduated from law school. I, on the other hand, have changed quite a bit personally, but not at all in an educational or professional standpoint. So I don't really want to deal with that judgement, so it's maybe better for me if I don't talk to her.

Also, if you're disposed to believe her claims, I ripped her heart out of her chest and smashed it to tiny pieces, and while the death of her father when she was 16 was upsetting, she dealt with it, and my breaking up with her sent her to therapy. I'm inclined to think that it was the straw on the camels back, but it makes me pause and think maybe it's better for her if I don't talk to her.

It's a toss-up. I'm not quite sure which one of us I'm "protecting", or if I'm flattering myself as to the impact I would have in her life now. But I'm sometimes curious to see how she's doing. We used to have an intense connection and great conversations, even before we were together. It's just a thought that pops into my head every now and then, and I end up never doing anything about it.
